While global ideas such as a defence net for the planet will change the way humans think about their future, there is one technological step forward that will take it even further-sustainable life off-world.
The fact is that all the testing by NASA and the Russian Space Agency has shown that off-world living has been beyond us- until now. It is not necessarily the dangers of radiation, but the long term detrimental effects of a weightless or less-gravity environment on the function of the human body.
A second fact about off-world living has also been the fragility of expensive equipment in space. A pain fleck in space suddenly becomes a deadly missile. As junk increases in orbit around the planet, running space stations has become a risk business. One sizeable piece of space junk (say a fridge) and a space station would be history.
  Thinking big, like a planet
The Atlas space station will solve both of those problems in understanding the dynamics of planets and spheres in space and building a space station that could be hit by something the size of a bus in space and still be OK.
A space station with stable and normal gravity levels enabling long term (years) without the health dangers. A space station with a hull that actually creates its own mini-atmosphere when it orbits, giving it a cushion protecting it from external objects and rays.
